The short answer結論
The JLPT helps, but not by itself. What employers need is the ability to handle client meetings in Japanese, write reports the parent company will read, and navigate two business cultures. A test score shows you studied; it does not show you can do those things. In our experience, some candidates with N1 struggle with business conversations, while others without the test but with experience inside a Japanese organization handle everything the role requires.JLPTは役立ちますが、それだけでは十分ではありません。雇用主が求めているのは、日本語でクライアントミーティングを行い、親会社が読む報告書を作成し、二つのビジネス文化を理解して行動できる能力です。試験のスコアは勉強したことを示しますが、実務ができることを証明するものではありません。私たちの経験では、N1を持っていてもビジネス会話に苦労する候補者もいれば、試験は受けていないが日系企業での実務経験があり、求められるすべてのタスクをこなせる候補者もいます。
What is actually going on採用側の視点
Employers filling these roles are solving a coordination problem. The US entity needs to execute in English — contracts, regulatory filings, customer conversations, vendor negotiations. At the same time, the parent company operates in Japanese, and the person in this role is often the bridge. That means translating strategy from head office, writing status reports that executives in Japan will read, and joining calls where English and Japanese are both spoken.これらのポジションを採用する企業は、調整の課題を解決しようとしています。米国法人は英語で業務を遂行する必要があります。契約書、規制当局への届出、顧客との会話、ベンダーとの交渉などです。同時に、親会社は日本語で運営されており、このポジションの担当者が橋渡し役となることがよくあります。つまり、本社からの戦略を翻訳し、日本の経営陣が読む状況報告書を作成し、英語と日本語の両方で行われる会議に参加することを意味します。
The JLPT measures reading, listening, grammar and vocabulary. It does not measure whether you can explain a regulatory delay to a Japanese executive, negotiate with a US vendor and then summarize the outcome for your manager in Tokyo, or participate in a budget review conducted in two languages. Those are the tasks the job description is written around.JLPTは読解、聴解、文法、語彙を測定します。日本人の経営陣に規制上の遅延を説明したり、米国のベンダーと交渉してその結果を東京のマネージャーに要約したり、二言語で行われる予算レビューに参加したりできるかどうかは測定しません。職務記述書はこれらのタスクを中心に書かれています。

The hiring decision turns on whether you can do the work. A certificate proves you passed an exam. Experience inside a Japanese company, or working with a Japanese client, shows you have done something similar before. When we screen candidates, employers ask about the latter.採用決定は、実際に仕事ができるかどうかにかかっています。証明書は試験に合格したことを証明します。日系企業での経験、または日本のクライアントとの業務経験は、以前に類似のことをしたことがあることを示します。候補者をスクリーニングする際、雇用主は後者について尋ねます。
What to do about it対策
If you have the JLPT: put the level on your resume, and then show how you have used Japanese in a work setting. That could be a project you completed, a client you supported, or reporting you wrote. The credential and the application together make a complete picture.JLPTを持っている場合:レベルを履歴書に記載し、職場で日本語をどのように使用したかを示してください。完了したプロジェクト、サポートしたクライアント、作成した報告書などが該当します。資格とその応用を合わせることで、完全な全体像が示されます。
If you do not have the JLPT: take it. The test is not sufficient by itself, but the credential still appears in job descriptions. While you are preparing for it, document the Japanese work you are already doing. If you are not using Japanese at work, find a way to start — volunteer for a project that involves a Japanese client or vendor, or offer to help with translation if your company has a Japan connection.JLPTを持っていない場合:受験してください。試験だけでは十分ではありませんが、資格は依然として求人情報に記載されています。準備している間に、すでに行っている日本語の業務を記録してください。職場で日本語を使用していない場合は、始める方法を見つけてください。日本のクライアントやベンダーが関わるプロジェクトにボランティアで参加したり、会社に日本とのつながりがある場合は翻訳を手伝うことを申し出てください。
Interviews for these roles include questions about how you have used Japanese professionally. Examples from your work strengthen the conversation.これらの役割の面接には、専門的に日本語をどのように使用したかについての質問が含まれます。実務からの例は、会話を強化します。
What people get wrongよくある誤解
One mistake we see repeatedly: assuming N1 is enough. A candidate lists the certification, says nothing about how they have used Japanese, and then struggles when the interview includes a Japanese conversation about their work. The test shows you studied; it does not replace a track record.繰り返し見られる誤りの一つ:N1で十分だと仮定すること。候補者は資格を記載し、日本語をどのように使用したかについては何も言わず、面接で自分の仕事について日本語で会話することになると苦労します。試験は勉強したことを示しますが、実績の代わりにはなりません。
Another: skipping the test entirely because “I speak Japanese.” The JLPT is not a perfect measure, but it is a common reference point. A resume without it raises questions you would not face if you had taken the exam.もう一つ:「日本語を話せる」という理由で試験を完全にスキップすること。JLPTは完璧な尺度ではありませんが、一般的な基準点です。JLPTのない履歴書は、試験を受けていれば直面しなかったであろう疑問を引き起こします。
One more mistake we encounter: translating your entire resume into Japanese and sending both versions. Unless the job description asks for it, this creates confusion about which version to read. Put your JLPT level and your Japanese work experience in the English resume; that is what employers need.もう一つよく遭遇する誤り:履歴書全体を日本語に翻訳し、両方のバージョンを送ること。求人情報で求められていない限り、どちらのバージョンを読むべきかについて混乱を生じさせます。JLPTレベルと日本語の職務経験を英語の履歴書に記載してください。それが雇用主が必要とするものです。
