The short answer
A resume for a Japanese company operating in the United States needs to show two things: that you can do the work in English in the US, and that you can work in Japanese with the parent company. In our experience, demonstrated experience inside a Japanese organization—whether in Japan or the US—carries more weight than test scores alone.
What is actually going on実際に何が起きているか
These employers are staffing US operations of companies headquartered in Japan. The role is performed in English, in the United States, under US employment law. But coordination with the parent company—reporting, approvals, strategy, product direction—is conducted in Japanese. The hiring manager in the US evaluates whether you can do the work. The parent company evaluates whether you can work with them.
That creates a split screen. A resume that works for a US-only employer may not surface what a Japanese parent company needs to see. The parent company is not evaluating your nationality or background. It is evaluating whether you can read a strategy deck in Japanese, present results to executives in Tokyo, negotiate with a supplier in Osaka, and understand what is actually being said in a conference call when the discussion shifts from English to Japanese mid-sentence.

The pool of people who can do this work is not defined by nationality. It includes Japanese-English bilingual professionals living and working in the US, Japanese-speaking professionals whose first language is not Japanese, people who studied or worked in Japan, people with experience inside Japanese companies in the US, and people who have worked with a Japanese head office from a US role. What unites them is capability, not background.

What to do about itどう対処するか
The resume needs to make both capabilities visible. Here is what that looks like in practice.
How the resume moves through review
-
Initial screening
Language ability and basic qualifications checked. A resume with no explicit Japanese proficiency statement usually stops here. -
US hiring manager review
Technical fit, relevant experience, and English-language professional capability evaluated. Can this person do the work in the US? -
Parent company consultation
Japanese ability, experience working with Japanese organizations, and cross-cultural work examples reviewed. Can this person work with Tokyo? -
Decision決定
Both sides must be satisfied. A strong technical fit with weak Japan-side capability rarely moves forward.
Specify Japanese proficiency with evidence
A line that says “Japanese: fluent” tells the reader nothing. We find that resumes which work include the proficiency level, how long Japanese has been used professionally, and in what contexts. For example: “Business-level Japanese; conducted supplier negotiations, prepared board materials, and led customer meetings in Japanese for four years at [company name].” That statement can be verified.
Name Japan-side experience explicitly
If you worked in Japan, name the companies, the work, and the stakeholders you coordinated with. If you worked with a Japanese parent company from a US role, describe what that coordination involved: reporting to Japan-side management, aligning product strategy with Tokyo, supporting Japan market launches from the US side. The employer is not guessing. Make the experience visible.
Include a Japanese-speaking reference
At least one reference should be able to speak to your Japanese-language ability and your experience working with Japanese organizations or stakeholders. A reference who cannot evaluate that dimension leaves a gap the employer will notice.

- Cross-cultural work is demonstrated, not asserted: specific examples of coordination, reporting, or collaboration with Japan-side stakeholders
- At least one reference can speak to Japanese ability and cross-cultural work少なくとも一名の推薦者が日本語能力と異文化業務について語れる
- Technical terms are correct in both languages if you are including a Japanese-language resume

What people get wrong
Leaving Japanese ability implicit
One mistake we see repeatedly: a candidate assumes that a Japanese surname, or education in Japan, signals Japanese ability. It does not. The employer needs an explicit statement of proficiency with evidence. We have worked with candidates whose Japanese ability was native-level but whose resumes never said so. Those resumes did not move forward until the gap was corrected.
Treating Japan experience as optional detail
Another pattern: a candidate lists Japan-side work in a prior role but does not describe what that work involved or who it was coordinated with. The employer cannot evaluate what is not described. If you reported to a Japan-side manager, coordinated product launches with Tokyo, or worked with suppliers in Japan, that experience belongs in the role description, not in a background note.
Submitting only a Japanese-language resume to a US role
The role is performed in English, in the United States. A Japanese-language-only resume for a US role signals that the candidate may not be prepared to work in an English-language environment. In our experience, the resumes that work include both: an English-language resume for the US hiring manager, and a Japanese-language resume for the parent company. Both matter.
Using test scores as a substitute for demonstrated experience
A JLPT score or other test result is a data point. It is not a substitute for a description of how Japanese has been used professionally. We find that employers weight demonstrated work experience in Japanese—meetings conducted, documents prepared, negotiations led—more heavily than test results. Include the test score if you have one, but do not let it replace the work examples.JLPTスコアやその他の試験結果はデータポイントです。
