The short answer
Show where you used Japanese in a work context and what you accomplished in it. Employers filling these roles screen for evidence that you can do specific work—write reports, communicate with a parent company, handle meetings—not for a proficiency rating alone. Include test scores if you have them, but lead with the work.
What is actually going on実際に何が起きているか
Roles at Japanese-affiliated companies in the United States require work in English and communication with a parent company or regional office in Japan. When screening candidates, the employers we work with look for evidence of prior work in this setting.
A test score establishes a baseline, but the screen that matters is whether you can do the specific work the role requires: write reports in Japanese, present to executives, collaborate across time zones, deliver what a head office needs.
Experience inside a Japanese organization—whether in Japan or at a US subsidiary—demonstrates understanding of that environment. The same is true for work with Japanese clients, or for academic or professional training in Japan.
In our experience, employers filling these roles give more weight to demonstrated work capability than to a proficiency level stated without context. The resume that shows where Japanese was used answers the questions the screen asks.

What to do about itどう対処するか
List the business contexts where you used Japanese. If you worked at a Japanese company, describe what you did in Japanese: wrote reports, managed communication with a parent office, presented to executives, supported work across both markets.
Include any academic or professional experience in Japan. If you studied there, name the institution and what you did in Japanese. If you worked there, describe the role and the language demands it carried.
Add test scores if you have them—JLPT, BJT, or university-level assessments—but present them as credentials alongside the work, not as the complete picture. The score supports the claim; the work experience makes it.
Show cross-cultural capability. If you have experience working with a Japanese head office, navigating organizational structure in both markets, or translating needs between a US operation and a Japanese parent company, that belongs in the description.

What people get wrong
One mistake we see repeatedly: leading with a JLPT level and nothing else. The score matters, but without work context it does not answer the question the employer is asking.
Another: using terms like “business-level” or “professional proficiency” without showing where that proficiency was applied. These are self-assessments, and they are not verifiable from the resume alone.
A third mistake we see: listing Japanese as a skill but not including it anywhere in the work history. If you used it professionally, that belongs in the description of the role where you used it, not only in a skills section.
