The short answer端的に言うと
Working at a Japanese company in the US means working in two business environments at once. Your immediate work is American—contracts, colleagues, compliance—but the role exists because someone at the parent company needs work done here in English and needs to communicate about it in Japanese. In our experience, decision-making authority, reporting relationships and communication patterns in these organizations differ from what the US org chart suggests.米国内の日本企業で働くということは、二つのビジネス環境で同時に働くことを意味します。直接的な業務は米国のもの(契約、同僚、コンプライアンス)ですが、その職務が存在するのは、親会社が英語での業務遂行と日本語でのコミュニケーションを必要としているからです。私たちの経験では、これらの組織における意思決定権限、報告関係、コミュニケーションパターンは米国の組織図が示すものとは異なります。
What is actually going on実際に何が起きているのか
The mechanism is straightforward. A company headquartered in Japan operates a subsidiary, branch or affiliated entity in the United States. That US operation needs people who can do the work in English—sales, engineering, compliance, finance—and also work in Japanese with the parent company on strategy, reporting, approvals and market intelligence.仕組みは単純です。日本に本社を置く企業が、米国で子会社、支店、または関連会社を運営しています。その米国拠点には、英語で業務(営業、エンジニアリング、コンプライアンス、財務)を遂行でき、かつ親会社と日本語で戦略、報告、承認、市場情報についてやり取りできる人材が必要です。
The structure shapes the work. Three common forms:組織構造が業務を形作ります。一般的な三つの形態:
| Structure構造 | How it works仕組み | What this means for youあなたにとっての意味 |
|---|---|---|
| Wholly-owned subsidiary完全子会社 | The US entity is fully owned by the Japanese parent. Budget, major decisions and leadership appointments typically require parent approval.米国法人は日本の親会社が完全所有。予算、主要決定、幹部人事は通常、親会社の承認が必要。 | Expect regular reporting to Tokyo. Authority for local decisions varies by company and by role.東京への定期報告を想定。現地判断の権限は企業や役割により異なる。 |
| Representative office or branch駐在員事務所または支店 | The US operation is not a separate legal entity. It represents the parent company directly in market research, relationship-building or client service.米国拠点は独立した法人ではない。市場調査、関係構築、顧客サービスにおいて親会社を直接代表。 | Tighter alignment with Tokyo. Less local autonomy; more coordination across time zones.東京との連携が密接。現地の自主性は低く、時差を超えた調整が多い。 |
| US company with Japanese ownership日本資本の米国企業 | A US-founded or US-headquartered company acquired by or partnered with a Japanese firm. The US leadership may remain in place.日本企業に買収された、または提携した米国発祥・米国本社の企業。米国のリーダーシップが維持される場合もある。 | Day-to-day work feels more American. Japanese-language ability supports integration meetings, reporting and strategic alignment with the new parent.日常業務はより米国的。日本語能力は統合会議、報告、新しい親会社との戦略調整を支える。 |
Japanese-affiliated companies operate across the United States.日本関連企業は米国全土で事業を展開しています。
How communication and decisions flowコミュニケーションと意思決定の流れ
- US-side input: You gather information, draft the proposal, run the analysis—in English, with US colleagues and clients.米国側のインプット: 情報収集、提案草案作成、分析実施を英語で、米国の同僚や顧客と行う。
- Translation and context: You translate the material into Japanese or present it in Japanese to the parent company, adding context about the US market, regulations or business environment that may not be obvious to someone in Tokyo.翻訳と文脈: 資料を日本語に翻訳、または日本語で親会社に提示し、東京にいる人には明らかでないかもしれない米国市場、規制、ビジネス環境に関する文脈を追加。
- Parent company review: Tokyo reviews, asks questions, requests changes or grants approval. This step takes time across time zones.親会社の審査: 東京が審査し、質問し、変更を要求するか承認する。このステップは時差を超えて時間がかかる。
- US-side execution: Once approved, you execute in English with your US team, clients or partners.米国側の実行: 承認されたら、米国のチーム、顧客、パートナーと英語で実行。
- Reporting back: You report results to both your US manager and the parent company in Japanese, maintaining visibility in both directions.報告: 結果を米国のマネージャーと親会社の両方に日本語で報告し、双方向の可視性を維持。
This is not every role. Some positions work entirely in English on the US side. But the roles that require Japanese language ability follow this pattern because that ability exists to serve this function.これがすべての役割ではありません。一部のポジションは米国側で完全に英語で業務を行います。しかし、日本語能力を必要とする役割は、その能力がこの機能を果たすために存在するため、このパターンに従います。

What to do about itどうすればよいか
Before you accept an offer, clarify how the organization actually works. The job description and the org chart will not tell you. These questions will:オファーを受ける前に、組織が実際にどう機能するかを明確にしてください。職務記述書や組織図では分かりません。次の質問で分かります:
Questions to ask during the interview面接で尋ねるべき質問
- Who do I report to day-to-day, and who do I report to in Tokyo?日々誰に報告し、東京では誰に報告しますか?
- What decisions can I make on my own, and what needs approval from the parent company?自分で決定できることは何で、親会社の承認が必要なことは何ですか?
- How often will I communicate in Japanese, and with whom?日本語でのコミュニケーションの頻度と相手は?
- What is the timeline for approvals that require parent company review?親会社の審査を要する承認のタイムラインは?
- Will I work across US business hours, Japan business hours, or both?米国営業時間、日本営業時間、または両方で働きますか?
- How does performance evaluation work—US-side only, or input from Tokyo as well?業績評価はどう行われるか。米国側のみか、東京からの意見も含むか?
- What happens when the US-side recommendation and the Tokyo-side preference conflict?米国側の推奨と東京側の希望が対立した場合、どうなりますか?
If the answers are vague, ask for examples. “Can you walk me through a recent decision this role was involved in?” will tell you more than an abstract org chart.回答が曖昧なら、具体例を求めてください。「この役割が関与した最近の意思決定について説明していただけますか?」という質問は、抽象的な組織図よりも多くを教えてくれます。
Once you understand the structure, prepare accordingly. If the role requires regular Japanese-language reporting, clarify the format—email summaries, presentations, phone calls, video conferences. If it requires working across time zones, clarify whether that means occasional early or late calls or a permanently split schedule. If it requires translation, clarify whether you are translating documents yourself or coordinating with a translation team.構造を理解したら、それに応じて準備してください。役割が定期的な日本語報告を必要とするなら、形式(メール要約、プレゼン、電話、ビデオ会議)を明確にします。時差を超えた業務が必要なら、それが時折の早朝・深夜の通話を意味するのか、恒久的な分割スケジュールを意味するのかを明確にします。翻訳が必要なら、自分で文書を翻訳するのか翻訳チームと調整するのかを明確にします。

What people get wrongよくある誤解
One mistake we see repeatedly: assuming the role works like a comparable position at a US-headquartered company, with Japanese language as an added skill. The language ability is not an add-on. It is the reason the role exists in this form.繰り返し見かける誤りの一つ:米国本社企業の同等ポジションと同じように機能し、日本語は付加的なスキルだと思い込むこと。日本語能力は追加要素ではありません。その役割がこの形で存在する理由です。
Another: expecting the US manager to have final authority over decisions when, in our experience, many decisions route to Tokyo regardless of what the US org chart shows.もう一つ:米国のマネージャーが最終決定権を持つと期待すること。私たちの経験では、米国の組織図に関係なく、多くの決定は東京に回されます。
In our experience, employers who hire for Japanese ability expect you to maintain regular, proactive communication with the parent company—not to translate on request.私たちの経験では、日本語能力を求める雇用主は、要求に応じた翻訳ではなく、親会社との定期的で積極的なコミュニケーションの維持を期待します。
Finally: underestimating how much context-setting the role requires. When you communicate between the US operation and the parent company, you are not just translating words. You are translating business environments—explaining why a US regulation matters, why a client expects a particular response time, why a compliance requirement works the way it does. That interpretive work is central to the role, not incidental to it.最後に:役割が必要とする文脈設定の量を過小評価すること。米国拠点と親会社の間でコミュニケーションするとき、単に言葉を翻訳しているのではありません。ビジネス環境を翻訳しているのです。なぜ米国の規制が重要か、なぜ顧客が特定の応答時間を期待するか、なぜコンプライアンス要件がそのように機能するかを説明します。この解釈的な作業は役割の中心であり、付随的なものではありません。
